Mike is fully retired now and his entire career has been in the British Merchant Service starting with P&O Cruises as Radio/Electronics Officer and then at Cable and Wireless Communications as Radio/Electronics Officer after which he became Chief Cable Engineer, Digital Fibre Optics.
Cable and Wireless Communications’ policy dictated that senior officers were offered experience in business. Mike was assigned to company head office in London for a two-year period where he requested to work in the business division to broaden his work experience.
Here he gained experience in contracts, negotiation, planning, finance and public relations. After the two-year period, Mike returned to where his heart was: “at sea - at the sharp end”, where the international projects were most intense.
In 1999, Cable and Wireless Communications was in the process of being taken over by outside interests and at that point Mike resigned and formed Pacific International Cable Consulting Inc.
His clients were various worldwide submarine cable companies, owners and organizations where he was involved in the planning, surveying, installation and maintenance of transoceanic long and short-haul, high-capacity, digital fibre optic systems from conception to in-service completion. His involvement with these organisations has also included preparing and conducting training courses for their personnel in various aspects of the industry.
Mike has continued his long standing association with the following organisations in scientific cabled submarine observatories:
